How to prepare for your 6-month baby photoshoot in Bristol

Your baby is growing and changing so quickly, and around six months is such a lovely stage to capture. Those little personalities are starting to shine through, with plenty of smiles, eye contact and adorable expressions.
A 6-month baby photoshoot is also a wonderful opportunity to capture some beautiful family photographs. While the focus will, of course, be on your baby, including parents in a few images creates special memories that you and your child will be able to look back on for years to come.
If you have booked a 6-month baby photoshoot and are wondering how to prepare, here are a few simple tips to help your session run smoothly.

Choose comfortable, timeless outfits
When choosing outfits, I always recommend keeping things simple and timeless. Neutral, soft or natural colours work beautifully in photographs and help keep the attention on your family rather than the clothing.
For parents, coordinating rather than matching exactly usually works best. Soft whites, creams, beige, grey, muted blues or earthy tones can photograph beautifully together.
Try to avoid large logos, busy patterns or very bright colours, as these can sometimes distract from your faces and your connection with each other.
The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and confident. When you feel relaxed, it will show in your photographs.
Think about your baby’s outfit
Simple is often best for babies too. A neutral romper, a beautiful knitted outfit or something that allows us to see those adorable little arms and legs can work perfectly.
I recommend bringing a spare outfit just in case of any little accidents or spills. If you are unsure what to dress your baby in, you are always welcome to send me a photo of the outfits you are considering before your session.
Try to time the session around naps and feeds
A happy, well-rested baby will usually be more relaxed and ready to enjoy the experience. If possible, try to avoid scheduling your session when your baby would normally be due for a nap. Giving them time to sleep beforehand and making sure they have had a feed can make a big difference. Of course, babies do not always follow the plan, and there is absolutely no need to worry if your little one is tired, hungry or simply having an off day. I always work at your baby’s pace and allow plenty of time for breaks, feeds and cuddles.
Don’t worry if your baby can’t sit up yet
Every baby develops at their own pace, so there is no expectation for your baby to be sitting independently at exactly six months. We can create beautiful photographs whether your baby is sitting, supported sitting, lying on their back or enjoying tummy time. Some of the sweetest photographs can come from simply capturing your baby’s natural expressions and personality at this stage.

Be ready to get involved!
We will capture a mixture of natural family moments, cuddles and relaxed photographs with your baby. There is no need to worry about posing perfectly — I will gently guide you throughout the session.
Bring your baby’s favourite toy if it helps
A favourite toy can sometimes be useful for getting your baby’s attention and encouraging those lovely smiles.
You may also want to bring a small comfort item, dummy or anything else that helps your baby feel settled. Even if we do not use it in the photographs, it can be helpful to have it nearby.
Relax and enjoy the experience
The best thing you can do is relax and enjoy some special time together as a family.
Babies can be unpredictable, and that is completely normal! There is no pressure for everything to go perfectly. Sometimes the unexpected moments, funny expressions and little cuddles become some of the most precious photographs from the session.
My aim is to create a relaxed and enjoyable experience for the whole family while capturing your baby exactly as they are at this special stage.
