A cake smash photoshoot is a great and fun way to celebrate your baby's 1st birthday.

I have prepared a few tips for you how to get ready for the session:

WHEN TO BOOK CAKE SMASH SESSION

If you would like to have your pictures ready for a birthday party or would like to use them for an invitations then I would recommend to book your cake smash at least 4 weeks in advance to get the pictures back in time before the party.

Some parents choose to book their photo shoot on baby's actual birthday, which is a great way to celebrate this special day. The choice is yours.

HOW LONG WILL THE SESSION LAST?

Cake smash session usually last about 1 hour, sometimes a bit longer.

We will start from taking a couple of family pictures (if requested), then a classic portraits without the cake of just the baby. Typically we have time for 2 outfit changes before the cake.

Once I bring in the cake, the photo session takes about 15 minutes. Some babies dig right in and smash the cake, when others need a little encouragement. Sometimes if baby is not interested in the cake, we will put a few snacks on top of the cake to motivate them.

It's going to be messy!

WHERE THE SESSION WILL TAKE PLACE?

My home studio in Bristol.

THE BIRTHAY SET UP

Once your session is booked we will discuss the decorations. You can pick what colours you would like to incorporate into the session or if there is a theme you would like to do we will discuss how that theme will look. If you don't have anything in mind I am happy give you some creative ideas.

I typically provide all the props and decorations but sometimes parents choose to bring their own.

BEFORE THE SESSION

A few days before the session please give your child a cupcake to get used to the idea. Let your baby play with it. Some babies get scared because they are unfamiliar with the cake and trying it at home first will help them during the session.

On the day of the session please make sure your baby is well rested.

Typically I schedule the cake smash session at 10am or 11am, please let me know what time is most suitable for your baby and I will do my best to accommodate you.

Right after their nap usually works well. Make sure baby is fed before your session because babies usually eat little to none of the cake. If you think baby might be teething, you might want to consider a pain reliever about 30 minutes before your session.

CAKE

If your baby has any known food allergies, I would recommend bringing your own cake.

If you are not sure if your baby will have an allergy to the cake, I recommend trying a cupcake at home first. If you prefer not to give a cake to your baby, there are lots of other options, like: Spaghetti Smash, Pancake Smash, Watermelon Smash, Pizza Smash etc.

If there are no allergies I will provide a cake. It's a simple Victoria sponge cake with a buttercream on top. I will match the colour of the cake to the chosen set up.

OUTFIT

You are welcome to bring anything you would like. There are many options on Amazon or Etsy.

You can also go simple and let baby go shirtless with just a nappy cover.

I also have a few baby outfits in the studio as an option!

WHAT TO BRING

-wet wipes

-towel

-snacks (sometimes baby needs a little encouragment to reach for the cake by putting a few snacks on top of it)

-extra outfit to wear once baby is all cleaned, extra outfit for you too as sometimes can get very messy

-milk, water

-nappies

-favourite toy

-outfit for portraits before the cake and cake smash outfit

-any special item that you would like to incorporate into the session

-hair brush

WHAT TO WEAR FOR FAMILY PORTRAITS

I would advice to choose something that coordinates well with the colors that you picked out. Lighter colours always look best whether you prefer light or dark backdrop.

I look forward to meeting you and your family soon!

First of all, congratulations on your pregnancy!

If you have never booked a pregnancy photo session before, you probably don't know what to expect and how you can prepare to make the most of your maternity photo session.

I have prepared this little guide to make this experience easy for you and get the best pictures possible.

WHEN TO BOOK YOUR PREGNANCY PHOTO-SHOOT

Please try to book your photo session as early as possible, usually the right time is after your 2nd scan to allow enough time to plan for your session and to guarantee your place. The best time to schedule your maternity photo session is between 32 to 36 weeks when your belly has a lovely round shape and you feel light and radiant. The last couple of weeks of pregnancy can be very tiring and you might feel uncomfortable as the swelling tends to worsen towards the end of your pregnancy and also there is a risk of giving birth before your scheduled session.

BRISTOL PREGNANCY PHOTOSHOOT

WHO TO BRING WITH YOU

Your partner and other children are most welcome to come with you for a couple of portraits.

It is important to include them and share this special moments with them too.

If bringing children please remember to bring a few snacks for them (nothing that will stain please) as the children tend to get bored very quickly especially if the focus is not on them.

WHAT TO BRING FOR THE SESSION

Let me know if there are any significant images you wish to have or don't want. Everyones style is different.

Please let me know if you are interested in doing partial or nude pictures. It is important for me to know what you are comfortable with before the session so I can plan the poses.

I have plenty of maternity dresses, floating fabrics, body suits, crop tops and other outfits for you to borrow.

However please bring plain white, nude and set of black underwear for your session.

I have a variety of fabrics we can drape around you to show off your pregnancy belly.

If you wish to have some casual maternity pictures I would recommend to bring

-regular Jeans(for you and your partner)

-long flowy maxi dress and tube dress

-black or white jacket

-an oversized buttoned shirt or jumper

-bodysuit

-black and white shirts or t-shirts for your partner

-coordinating outfits for children

-any favourite accessories , jewellery, hats, scarves etc.

-any sentimental items like baby's little shoes or a teddy, scan picture etc.

These are just the ideas, I have a big range of outfits you are welcome to use.

HAIR, MAKE UP AND NAILS

Pregnancy photo shoot is a great excuse to pamper yourself. Whether you going for a glamorous look or natural one I would recommend to put a little more than what you normally would to define your eyes and lips.

Neutral looking fake lashes can really flatter your eyes.

If in budget, I would recommend professional make up and hair done to feel even more beautiful and confident.

Get your nails and toes ready for the photo session.

Your hands will appear in all of your pictures, let's make them look good!

Are you looking to book newborn photo session for your baby?

Here is the list of most common questions I get asked from my clients:

WHEN TO BOOK YOUR NEWBORN SESSION?

I recommend you book your newborn session while you are still pregnant. I will reserve a time slot around your due date. Obviously the actual date of the session will not be known until your baby arrives. Within 48 hours of giving birth please let me know and we will arrange a date that is suitable for you. I limit the amount of sessions per month to ensure the highest quality of service to clients. So it is never too early to book a session and of course you can get in touch at anytime if you have any queries.

If you have only just discovered Newborn Photography shortly after giving birth then all is not lost and I will do my best to fit you in however priority always goes to existing bookings.

The deposit of £30 is required to book your photo shoot and the remaining payment needs to be paid on the day of your shoot.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO DO NEWBORN PHOTO SESSION?

The perfect age for a newborn shoot is when your baby is BETWEEN 5 - 14 DAYS OLD. Under 2 weeks newborns still have that magical womb like behaviour that allows their fresh miraculous newborn look to be captured undisturbed. With only a window of a few days you have only one chance to capture that moment before it passes you by.

I MISSED THE NEWBORN STAGE AND MY BABY IS NOW 2 MONTHS OLD, CAN WE STILL BOOK THE PHOTO SESSION?

I photograph babies at any age. After 6 weeks your baby is no longer considered newborn however we can still take beautiful portraits. Please understand your baby most likely will not be able to do newborn poses as they are usually awake at this age.

SESSION

Newborn sessions are done in my home studio or in the comfort of your home (extra charge of £20 will be added) . Sessions are typically 2-3 hours long, allowing enough time for feeding and comforting. For a full price list please follow the link below:

PROOFS

About 2-3 weeks after your session, I will invite you for a viewing appointment to choose your pictures/wall art. Once full payment is received your prints/wall art will be ordered; they can take 2-3 weeks for prints delivery and about 6 weeks time for wall art/photo album.

All images will be stored and archived up to 60 days.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING TO THE NEWBORN SESSION?

Just the usual: wet wipes, nappies, lots of milk if not breastfeeding, blanket, dummy if your baby uses one. Please bring a snack and water for yourself and any siblings.

Feel free to bring baby's toy or a blanket or something sentimental if you wish to include it in the pictures.

I have lots of props to choose from in my Bristol studio: blankets, hats, headbands, wraps, baskets etc. We will discuss the style and colours once you arrive for your session.

BRISTOL NEWBORN PHOTOSHOOT

HOW TO PREPARE BEFORE THE SESSION?

Try to keep your baby awake 1-2 hours before the session. Please don't worry if your baby fells asleep in the car. I know how hard is to keep baby awake during the long drive. Once you arrived, I would ask you to undress your baby and wrap him/her in the blanket.I would recommend to feed your baby before we start the photo session.

WHAT HAPPENS IF MY BABY CRIES DURING THE SESSION?

Sometimes babies wake up during the photo session and even get a bit fussy. Please don’t worry, we can always take a break to feed your baby, change your baby's nappy or just to have a cuddle with mummy. Usually simple swaddling your baby helps a lot and I always make sure to keep your baby nice and warm.

WHAT SHOULD WE WEAR FOR FAMILY PORTRAITS?

Neutral, light colours are always a great choice for newborn sessions.

If you are a fan of black and white pictures then please bring a black t-shirt/shirt with you.

Stay away from large logos, patterns, neon colours to not overshadow your baby!
